A rare creative retreat in a unique place.
Prairieside Outpost Artist Residency program offers a unique artist residency experience–it is comfortable, private, peaceful, family-friendly and nature-oriented. While close to urban areas, it is truly an out-of-the-way place in one of the most unique geographical landscapes in the United States.
About the Residency Program
Prairieside Outpost hosted a family-friendly artist residency program from 2014-2026 that welcomed over 30 artists from across North America through a competitive application process for short creative retreats. Starting in Summer 2026, the program is on a short break.
The ten-year anniversary of the Artist Residency Program at Prairieside Outpost was celebrated through the group exhibition As Grass Grows: Ten Years at Prairieside Outpost at Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in the Kansas City Crossroads Arts District. Twenty-five of our past artists-in-residence participated in this group exhibition.
The exhibition was accompanied by a comprehensive catalog featuring images and written contributions from all of our past artist residents, as well as guest essays by S. Portico Bowman, Sally Paul, and Residency Program Director Laura Berman. This catalog documents how time and the natural environment have meaningfully supported and impacted the creative work of an outstanding community of artists.
Artist Reports
We have welcomed over 30 artists and writers to our residency program since it began in 2014. You can learn more about the artists' experiences in the Prairieside Outpost Artist Residency through their own writings and images, linked below.
